The short version: The fleets that make the most money do three things. They pay less for insurance. They do not insure cheap cars. They check every driver. SoftCarTech helps you do all three. The platform is free for rideshare fleets under 30 cars. Rideshare liability insurance from our partner insurer is $21 a day with up to $90,000 in coverage.
You rent cars to Uber, Lyft and DoorDash drivers. You buy a $6,000 car. You rent it out for $250 a week. You do it again.
Some fleet owners make good money doing this. Some lose money. The difference is not the cars. It is these three things.
1. They pay less for insurance
Here is what rideshare fleet insurance costs today.
$21 a day
SoftCarTech (partner insurer) Up to $90,000 in coverage Covers Uber, Lyft and DoorDash: Yes Software fee: $0 for fleets under 30 cars Setup fee: $0
$39 a day and up
Roamly (with Wheelbase Pro) Liability plus car damage, $2,500 deductible Covers Uber, Lyft and DoorDash: Yes Software fee: Starts at $250 a month (you must use Wheelbase) GPS tracker: Required on every car Real quotes: Many fleet owners report paying $50 a day or more
Turo
Covers Uber, Lyft and DoorDash: No
RentalCover.com
Covers Uber, Lyft and DoorDash: No
That is the whole list. Two plans cover rideshare. Two do not.
If a plan does not cover rideshare, the price does not matter. It is $0 of coverage.
Why cheap “full coverage” is not cheap
The moment your driver turns on the Uber app, the car is at work. Personal car insurance stops. Travel rental cover stops. If there is a crash, they do not pay.
Uber and Lyft give some cover when the app is on. But it is thin. When the app is on and no rider is in the car, Uber usually pays only $25,000 for damage to other cars. It pays $0 to fix your car. This is the time your driver spends cruising and waiting for a ping. This is when fleets get hurt.
What this means for a 10-car fleet
| Per car, per day | 10 cars, 30 days | |
| SoftCarTech partner insurer | $21 | $6,300 |
| Roamly (listed price) + Wheelbase | $39 + software | $11,950 |
| Roamly (what owners report) + Wheelbase | $50 + software | $15,250 |
You keep $5,650 to $8,950 more every month.
At $250 a week per car, that is the profit from four to seven more cars. Every month.
SoftCarTech is not an insurance company. We are a fleet platform. We connect you to a rideshare liability plan from a licensed partner insurer. The insurer sets the terms. Prices change by state.
2. They do not insure cheap cars
Your fleet cars cost $5,000 to $8,000. Paying for collision cover on a $6,000 car is a bad deal. The premium is high. The deductible is high. The claim takes weeks. It is often faster to just buy another car.
Smart fleets do what the big rental companies do. They put the risk on the driver.
How it works
- Your rental agreement says the driver pays for any damage to the car.
- You take a deposit.
- You take photos at pickup and return.
- You upload the signed agreement to SoftCarTech. It stays with the driver and the car.
Now if the driver dents your car, the driver pays. Not you. Not an insurer.
But you still need liability
Here is the crash that ends fleets.
Your driver has the app on. No order yet. He runs a red light and hits a $90,000 BMW. The BMW driver hurts his neck.
- Your $6,000 car: The driver pays. You have his deposit. Done.
- The BMW and the injury: Uber pays $25,000. The BMW owner’s lawyer comes for the rest. You get named in the lawsuit.
This is why the rental agreement and the $21-a-day liability plan go together. The agreement covers the cheap thing (your car). The insurance covers the expensive thing (everyone else).
Most fleets do this backwards. They insure the cheap thing and hope about the expensive thing.
Do this: Have a lawyer read your agreement for your state. Deposit and damage rules are different everywhere.
3. They check every driver
The cheapest crash is the one that never happens. The best way to stop a crash is to look at the driver first.
Many fleets hand keys to anyone with a working Uber account. That is a mistake. Uber checks drivers for Uber’s risk, not yours. Uber’s check is done once, at signup. It does not know about the two crashes and the suspended license since then.
What SoftCarTech does
Every driver added to SoftCarTech goes through our license verification team before they get a car. You see the result on the driver’s profile.
This helps you three ways:
- With the insurer. You can show you were careful about who drives.
- In court. “We checked him first” is a much better answer than “He had the Uber app.”
- With your money. A checked driver brings the car back in one piece. Less downtime. Fewer deposit fights.
All three together
| Risk | Who pays with no plan | Who pays with SoftCarTech |
| Driver dents your $6,000 car | You | The driver (agreement + deposit) |
| Driver hits a $90,000 car | You (Uber stops at $25,000) | Partner insurer, up to $90,000 |
| Driver hurts someone | You | Partner insurer, within limits |
| Bad driver gets your car | You, sooner or later | Stopped by the license check |
Three things. One platform. Free under 30 cars. $21 a day for insurance.
Common questions
What is rideshare fleet insurance? Business insurance for cars you rent to Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, Uber Eats or Instacart drivers. Personal car insurance does not cover this.
How much does it cost? Through SoftCarTech’s partner insurer: $21 per car per day, up to $90,000 in coverage. Roamly starts at $39 a day plus software fees. Many owners report $50 a day or more.
Is SoftCarTech free? Yes, for rideshare fleets under 30 cars. Insurance is paid separately to the partner insurer.
Is SoftCarTech an insurance company? No. We are a fleet platform. We connect you to a licensed partner insurer.
Does Turo cover rideshare? No.
Does RentalCover.com cover rideshare? No.
Do I still need collision cover? For cheap fleet cars, most owners skip it. They use a rental agreement and a deposit instead. But you still need liability cover. That protects you when other people get hurt.
What does Uber cover when the app is on but no trip is accepted? Usually $50,000 per person and $100,000 per crash for injuries. $25,000 for property damage. $0 for your car. Some states ask for a bit more.
Why does a driver check matter? Fewer crashes. Better answer in court. Better standing with the insurer.
Ready to keep more of your money?
Two cars or two hundred, the math is the same. Cover the big risk with real rideshare liability. Handle the small risk with a contract. Check every driver.
